Fabelei
Hi! Ella speaking. As the print designer here at Desmond and Dempsey, I’d like to talk you through why my print of the season is the Fabelei Print.
Inspired by the intricate art of Scherenschnitte—a German term meaning "scissor cuts"—this print is a nod to the work of traditional “scissor cut” masters like Louis David Saugy and Johann-Jakob Hauswirth. The Fabelei Print tells its own story - a fable - with each detail hand-drawn using a fine-tip pen.
You’ll spot Alpine flora and fauna, alongside animals like a mountain goat, rabbits, butterflies, and birds.
This design holds a special place for me because it combines intricate detail with storytelling, bringing the beauty of the Alps to life. I loved diving into the work of the traditional Scherenschnitte masters and finding a new way to interpret their delicate scissor-cut techniques into something that feels true to their craft.
The technique also comes with a nostalgic note, and reminds me of Christmasses from my childhood - creating paper snowflake cutouts to decorate the house over the festive period.
Throughout our AW24 Die Alpen Collection, you’ll find the Fabelei print featured in both bold and subtle ways. It’s woven into our seasonal labels, adds charm to a custom-designed tape and broderie anglaise collar, and takes centre stage on our Boxy and Wide Leg Set.
For this particular set, we embraced a placement print design to maintain the artwork's symmetry—a process that required careful planning to ensure the print aligns perfectly on each piece.
Unlike our usual all-over prints, this technique requires the design to be tailored precisely to the garment’s dimensions, with the fabric cut in just the right position. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the adorable mini mock-ups we created to get the positioning just right.
Fancy Collar Long Set
This season, we’re introducing a brand-new shape—the Fancy Collar Long Set. It features a custom Fabelei broderie anglaise collar, with matching trims. The fabric is a soft and luxurious double gauze, and the Fabelei collar adds a touch of alpine charm. I’m looking forward to wearing this set as the temperature drops—it’s the ideal blend of style and comfort, perfect for chilly autumn and winter nights.
As I wrap up this piece, I’m reminded of the peaceful serenity of the Alps—a feeling of quiet and calm. Our Alpine Collection captures that cosy feeling of sipping mulled wine by a crackling fire in a snowy chalet. I hope it brings a touch of alpine magic into your everyday life.
Warm regards,
Ella
